Boil-water order in effect

CANFIELD — A precautionary boil order for Callahan Road, Neff Drive, Neff Court, Skyline Drive, Montgomery Drive, Canterbury Court, Talsman Drive, Village Boulevard and Winona Avenue will be in effect until 5 p.m. today.

The city experienced a waterline break on Neff Drive at 1:30 p.m. Friday, which reduced water pressure for about an hour. As a precautionary measure, water for drinking, cooking and oral hygiene should be boiled for at least one minute before use.

The city has no evidence that the water system was contaminated.

Campaign complaint

WARREN — Leadership of the Trumbull County Democratic Party has filed a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission about a flier being circulated by Randy Smith, a candidate for county engineer in Tuesday’s primary.

The flyer refers to Smith, of Hartford, county engineer’s deputy director, as “Your Endorsed Democratic Engineer.” Chris Michelakis, county party chairman, and Ralph Infante, vice chairman, allege in a Friday letter to the commission that the flier is illegal.

They pointed out that Smith is not endorsed by the county party and that he is not the county engineer. He has been endorsed by the Trumbull County Township Association. Smith is running against David DeChristofaro of Niles, the party’s endorsed candidate.

Assistant chief graduates

CANFIELD — Assistant Chief Charles Colucci of the Canfield Police Department has graduated from the 13-month Certified Law Enforcement Executive program. He was among 22 graduates honored at a graduation ceremony in Columbus on Feb. 15.

The course is co-sponsored by the Law Enforcement Foundation Inc. and Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police. Participants were selected by meeting standards in experience, education and professional experience.

The coursework includes classes in ethics, change management, interpersonal skills, vision, mission and organizational values, strategic planning, external environmental management and resource allocation and utilization.

Colucci has a master’s and bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice from Youngstown State University. He joined the Canfield Police Department in June 1996.

Independent candidate

LISBON — A Salem man has filed to run as an independent candidate for Columbiana County commissioner.

Gregory A. Shaffer, of 910 S. Lincoln Ave., is seeking to run for the Jan. 2 term.

The position is held by Democrat Penny Traina of Wellsville, who was appointed to the position.

Republican Becky Burke of East Liverpool is also seeking the post.

Shaffer ran as a write-in for mayor in 2007 and received 44 votes.

Charged with assault

NEW CASTLE — Police are charging a man with assault after a woman told them he beat her and pointed a shotgun at her chest.

Rodney Madison, 31, was arrested at around 11 p.m. Thursday at a home on Halco Street, police reported. They recovered a shotgun there matching the description. He is charged with reckless endangering, terroristic threats, simple assault and having a firearm while on parole for felony drug charges, police said.

YOUNGSTOWN — “Divide and Conquer,” a meeting of the minds between a buffalo soldier portrayed by Steffon Wydell Jones v. “Black Feather,” portrayed by Bill Wall, will be put on at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Steel Museum of Youngstown, 51 W. Wood St. The cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children. Jones will portray Alvin Smith, the last black Civil War veteran of Youngstown, and Charlie Garlick, a slave/citizen/soldier at Civil War History at the Arms Museum, 648 Wick Ave., from 3 to 5 p.m. March 9. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.

Break-in at billiards store

AUSTINTOWN — The owner of Billiards Emporium, 4220 Mahoning Ave., reported a break-in at the store that resulted in the loss of most of the store’s merchandise.

Taken were 186 pool cues, 35 custom pool cue shafts, 50 pool cue cases, 10 sets of pool balls, a cue lathe, tools and accessories, a computer and a small amount of cash.

The store’s owner reported that someone broke into the store by breaking out the glass window in the front door sometime between 7 p.m. Wednesday and about 3 a.m. Thursday.

The owner said the store would remain open.

Baby-sitting course

AUSTINTOWN — The American Red Cross baby sitter training course will be offered at Austintown Middle School right after school lets out Tuesday and Thursday. It will end at 6:30 p.m. The course costs $30 and includes a baby sitter handbook, a certificate, pen and date book, 20 business cards and an American Red Cross T-shirt. Homeless man charged

AUSTINTOWN — A 38-year-old homeless man was charged Thursday with a felony of assaulting a police officer and misdemeanors of resisting arrest, violating a protection order and disorderly conduct. Harold J. Jacobs faces the felony charge for allegedly kicking Lt. Ronald Deamicis in the leg while officers were trying to arrest him on the misdemeanor offenses, police said.

Officers were called to Woodhurst Drive at about 6 p.m. for a report that Jacobs was violating the terms of a protection order. On their second trip to the residence, officers attempted to arrest Jacobs, but he resisted and had to be carried to the police car.

Seeking replacements

McDONALD — The board of education will have a special meeting in executive session at 7 p.m. Sunday to review résumés for the high school principal and high school librarian. The two positions are being vacated under early retirement by John LaRocca, high school principal, and Carol Hart, high school librarian. LaRocca will leave July 31, and Hart leaves at the start of the 2008-09 school year. No action will be taken at the meeting.

Universal health care

YOUNGSTOWN — A community meeting on universal health care is planned today at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St. Speakers will be Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Andy Stern, president of Service Employees International Union. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the program will be at 6:30.

Kindergarten registration

McDONALD — The village school district will have kindergarten registration from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roosevelt Elementary School, 410 W. Seventh St. Students must be age 5 by July 1 to enroll for kindergarten. Parents or guardians can register children by bringing their birth certificates, immunization records, Social Security cards and custody papers, if applicable. In addition, those who don’t have other children in the school system must show proof of residency. This registration is only for school district residents. Open-enrollment applications must be processed through the superintendent’s office.

School district support

YOUNGSTOWN — City, Youngstown State University and city school board representatives will sign a “Covenant With the Community” at 3 p.m. Monday at West Elementary School auditorium, 310 S. Schenley Ave. The contract is a demonstration of solidarity and support for the school district and its efforts to accomplish a range of goals, including a continuous improvement plan and accountability to the community. Mayor Jay Williams, members of city council, YSU President David C. Sweet and city school board and teacher union representatives will participate. The program is open to the public.
