VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT

Pushed to the brink of season-ending elimination, the Boardman High girls basketball team rallied to force overtime, then defeated Howland, 43-35, in Friday’s Division I regional tournament.

“I don’t think anyone was sure, but our team never gives up,” said Spartans senior Courtney Schiffauer, who will be making her second trip to the state tournament in Columbus.

Sophomore Darryce Moore scored 19 points and made 11 rebounds for the Spartans (19-7). Howland’s Alexa Williams scored 13 points as the Tigers’ season ended at 20-4.

Boardman’s next opponent won’t be determined until today, but the Spartans will play Friday at 6 p.m. at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State.

In Division II, Northeast Inland district player of the year and Pitt recruit Kate Popovec scored nine points to go with 12 rebounds and three blocks for Canfield (21-2), which saw one of the best seasons in school history end with a 45-41 loss to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown in a regional final at Barberton High School.

Blazers sophomore Mylan Woods, the Northeast Lakes district player of the year, scored 19 points to lead Hathaway Brown (21-4), which is making its second straight trip to the state tournament.

The Cardinals were within one, 40-39, with less than a minute remaining before the Blazers scored four straight points to put the game away.
