Public health doctorate

Erin Murray, formerly of Austintown, has completed her doctorate in public health and epidemiology from Emory University in Atlanta.

During the course of her doctorate studies, Murray’s goal was to learn as much as she could about the high incidence of acute respiratory infections among Bangladeshi children.

Two trips to the Kamalapur district of Dhaka, Bangladesh, allowed for data gathering and research analysis in one of the most heavily populated urban slums in the world.

Murray was valedictorian of Fitch High School in 1995, earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Westminster College in 1999, and her master’s degree in public health/epidemiology from Emory in 2001.

During her studies, she has received various scholarships and honors. She was awarded the Atlanta chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation and was the first recipient of the Anoopa Sharma Memorial Scholarship.

Murray makes her home in Manhattan and works for the New York City health department. She also has completed the Iron Man triathlon event in Brazil. She is the daughter of Richard and Peggy Murray of Austintown.

DOCTORS

Yale medical degree

Dr. Ryan Kaple, son of Tim and Yvonne Kaple of Boardman, has received a doctor of medicine degree with cum laude honors from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.

While at Yale, Dr. Ryan received the Sarnoff Fellowship and studied an additional year at Columbia University in New York City.

During this one-year fellowship, he conducted research on intravascular ultrasound, a method for detecting coronary atherosclerosis.

Dr. Kaple is a 1999 honors graduate of Boardman High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2003. He has started a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, and plans on pursuing a career in interventional cardiology.

International health focus

Thomas C. Masters II of Boardman has received his doctor of medicine degree from Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine with a focus in international health.

Dr. Masters recently returned from Montana, where he completed a monthlong clerkship on the Crow Indian Reservation. During summer 2005, he worked at Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital in Manzini, Swaziland, Africa.

In July, he will begin a three-year residency program in emergency medicine in Dayton with Wright State School of Medicine.

He is the son of Tom and Jane Masters of Boardman. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Denison University in 2004 and was a 2000 graduate of Boardman High School.

Medicine degree

Robert Patrick Budinsky of Poland received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine.

Dr. Budinsky is a 2000 valedictorian graduate of Poland Seminary High School and graduated summa cum laude from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

He is beginning a three-year residency in pediatrics at DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich.

He is the son of Atty. Robert and Diane Budinsky of Poland.
