Man gets 3 years for wife’s death

COLUMBUS (AP) — A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for causing the New Year’s day deaths of his pregnant common-law wife by driving drunk.

Twenty-nine-year-old Alfonso Martinez pleaded guilty in May to two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of Paulina Martinez, who was nine months pregnant.

Perry Township police in central Ohio say Martinez was legally drunk when he ran a red light and collided with an Ohio Department of Transportation salt truck.

He was sentenced Friday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court after his lawyer told a judge Martinez had planned to stay at a relative’s house but was kicked out after an argument. His wife did not know how to drive.

Martinez is a Mexican immigrant in the United States illegally and will likely be deported after his imprisonment.
