HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY Eugene Tenaglia


Born: July 11, 1908, in Carunchio, in the Chieti province of Italy.

Parents: Nazario and Emilia Tenaglia.

Immigrated: He immigrated to the United States and to Youngstown in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression.

Married: Connie Carano in 1935. She died in 2002 at the age of 90.

Family: Three daughters, Donna Kaufman of Boardman; Diann Konkel of Fort Myers, Fla.; and Barbara Campbell of Boardman, with whom he has made his home for the past four years. The family includes 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Employment: Worked at Leonardo’s Greenhouse doing what he has enjoyed most, making things grow. After the birth of their first child in 1936, he began working for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co., where he remained for 37 years until retiring.

Hobby: Gardening continued to be his lifelong love, and he always had a well-cared-for and productive garden at this home. Visitors often left with baskets of homegrown vegetables. Despite the delay of warm weather this spring, he has managed to start a few tomato plants.

Affiliations: A member of St. Luke Church in Boardman, where he attends Mass nearly every day.

Celebrations: On July 12, his daughters will be hostesses for a dinner in his honor. Guests will include his extended family, intimate friends and members of his church community.
