Borts Pool to reopen

YOUNGSTOWN — Borts Pool on the city’s West Side will reopen at 1 p.m. Monday now that a broken back-flow pump has been replaced.

The pool will remain open from 1 to 8 p.m. seven days a week through the summer.

Guard unit needs items

AUSTINTOWN — Collections of nonperishable items and money for the 838th Military Police Unit of the Ohio National Guard are being accepted at the Austintown Fire Department, 384 N. Canfield-Niles Road.

The 250 members of the unit, headquartered on Victoria Road in the township, are stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The collection will go on until the unit comes home, said firefighter John Fritz. They are expected to return this December or later.

Among the items needed are baby wipes, snack foods, canned foods, flashlights, gloves, drink mixes, deodorant, soap, batteries, candy, socks and toothpaste.

New Castle man charged

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Borough police charged Richard Allan Vogan, 25, of New Castle with receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving under suspension.

The charges are the result of the Dec. 3, 2007, theft of a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse from a New Castle woman.

Vogan was arrested Friday at the Lawrence County jail, where he was locked up on previous convictions.

He also is awaiting a hearing on a probation violation, police said.

Task force needs tools

YOUNGSTOWN — City block watch members who want to clean up their neighborhoods need garden/yard tools.

The Mahoning Valley Task Force on Crime and Violence Prevention is accepting rakes, shovels, weed whackers, water buckets, hedge clippers and so forth to be distributed and shared among the block watches in the city.

Beekeepers to meet

BAZETTA — The Trumbull County Beekeepers Association will meet at 2 p.m. July 6 at the county fairgrounds.

Fair preparations and sale of honey will be discussed.

Members should bring a food item for a potluck dinner after the meeting.
