SRU has spots for performing arts academy


SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — There are still openings available for high school students interested in the Summer Creative Performing Arts Academy at Slippery Rock University.

Students in grades nine through 12 can study with master educators in the visual arts, jazz, dance, theater and creative writing.

The 12-day program runs July 7-18, and applications are being accepted through today. This year’s them is “Exploring Pop: Inquiries into Popular Culture.”

“We have openings in all disciplines,” said Dr. Joseph McCarren, academy director. Participants will select one subject area.

The academy includes field trips and a closing showcase performance/art exhibit and reception. Students have the option to stay in dorms or commute, and those completing the program receive one college credit. Limited financial help is available.

The cost is $695 for Pennsylvania residents who will stay on campus and $495 for Pennsylvania residents who will commute. The cost for out-of-state students is $1,075 and includes room and board.

The Summer Academy is sponsored by Slippery Rock University and Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV with support from the Pennsylvania Regional Summer Schools of Excellence and the Midwestern Arts and Humanities Foundation.
