Fire put out on South Side
YOUNGSTOWN — No one was home at 1662 Chattanooga Ave. when firefighters arrived at 2:30 a.m. Thursday and found heavy fire on the first floor.
The cause is under investigation. Damage to the South Side house and contents was set at $22,000.
Annual pet fest planned
SALEM — Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary is having its annual Pet and Family Festival at Quaker City Raceway from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
The day is dedicated to families and their pets, where there is something for everyone. It will feature a freestyle car crush by Joe Sylvester and the Bad Habit Monster Truck.
While eating the food of The Hickory Rib, spectators can listen to country-western singer Cassie Simpson, who will be singing between events such as a dog trivia contest, reverse raffle, a cornhole tournament and pet costume contest.
Animaland Station will be available all day for kids to stuff their own animals, and a Chihuahua will ride a motorcycle.

New citizens welcomed
YOUNGSTOWN — Judge Theresa Dellick of Mahoning County Juvenile Court presided over the naturalization ceremony Thursday in common pleas court to welcome 12 new citizens.

Motorcyclist killed in crash
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A motorcyclist was killed on U.S. Route 422 near the state Route 168 overpass, Pennsylvania State Police in New Castle reported. Raymond E. Spangler, 65, of 3613 Hubbard Road, West Middlesex, Pa., died at the scene at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Spangler was traveling west on Route 422 in the slow lane when he crossed the passing lane into the median, striking a guide rail as he did so, police said.
He was thrown from the motorcycle and landed along the southern berm more than 82 feet away, police said. The motorcycle traveled 172 feet and came to rest on the opposite side of the highway, police said.
Police said numerous motorists stopped to try to help Spangler, but could not. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.
July Fourth event
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Westminster College will host an Independence Day celebration with a free concert and fireworks at 7:30 p.m. July 3 at Brittain Lake.
The 19th annual concert features the River City Brass Band playing a variety of patriotic, religious, folk, Broadway and Hollywood music.
Attendance in recent years has reached 10,000, so early arrival is suggested for this family-oriented event. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating, as well as picnic baskets and refreshments. Food vendors will be on site.
Battery D 229th Field Artillery of the Pennsylvania National Guard will supply howitzer fire during the “1812 Overture.” The evening will be capped by a fireworks display provided by Pyrotecnico.

NORTH LIMA — Copies of Beaver Township News, the township’s first newsletter, are available at the administration office on West South Range Road.
The publication is also being distributed at various events throughout the township including the weekly Wednesday evening summer concert series at Woodworth Park. The newsletter offers contact information for township officials, events taking place in the area and other information residents might find useful.
