Apheresis is the process of removing platelets from blood and returning the remaining components, such as red blood cells and plasma, to the donor. Platelets are cells that help stop bleeding and are used for patients undergoing aggressive treatments for leukemia, aplastic anemia and other blood disorders. Information about the program:

In 2007, St. Elizabeth Health Center transfused 848 patients with platelets and collected 150 units of platelets.

Platelet donors may donate every two weeks.

The process takes about 45 to 90 minutes.

The shelf life of platelets is five days, two of which are consumed with testing. If they come from elsewhere, another day of shelf life is taken up for transportation.

Also in 2007, St. Elizabeth collected 2,000 units of whole blood and transfused 14,000 units of whole blood.

To donate, call HMHP Donor Services at (330) 480-2595.
