Scrappers’ rookie pitcher leads 5-2 win over Auburn

AUBURN, N.Y. — Rookie Kaimi Mead pitched five shutout innings and recorded his first win of the season as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers knocked off division-leading Auburn Doubledays 5-2 Tuesday night in a New York-Penn League game.

The Hawaii Pacific product scattered five hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter as he improved his season record to 1-1.

He was backed up by a 10-hit Scrappers attack that was led by shortstop Isaias Velasquez who finished with three hits including a double and drove in a run.

The Scrappers (4-4) scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning, one on an RBI single by Ryan Blair and then scored three times in the ninth led by a two-run single from Jason Rodriguez and a single by Velasquez.

Kaimi and three Scrappers relievers, Mike McGuire, Garrett Rieck and Daniel Morales, combined to strike out 10 Doubledays and did not issue a walk.

The two teams will close out their series tonight in a 7:05 contest before the Scrappers return home to open a six-game home standing beginning Thursday night against Batavia.
