Basketball recruit
YOUNGSTOWN — Jaquetta Westley, a 5-foot-7 guard from Spoon River College, will continue her basketball career at YSU, coach Cindy Martin announced.
Westley, who is Martin’s third signee, will be a junior and have two years of eligibility remaining.
Last season at Spoon River, Westley was named first-team all-region and all-conference after averaging 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals per game.
Westley joins Kenya Middlebrooks (Toledo), Macey Nortey (Long Beach, Calif.) and Camisha Alexander (Beckley, W.Va.), who signed during the early signing period.
Patteson back to coach softball
YOUNGSTOWN — Tiffany Patteson, one of the most-decorated softball players in YSU history, has returned to her alma mater to serve as an assistant softball coach, head coach Brian Campbell announced.
Patteson, the 2006 YSU-Vindicator Female Athlete of the Year, spent the 2008 season as a graduate assistant coach at Tiffin, where she helped guide the Dragons to a 27-14-1 record in their inaugural season in NCAA Div. II.
A four-year letterwinner at YSU, Patteson served as a student assistant coach during 2007 while completing her degree.
She is a four-time All-Horizon League selection and owns several YSU all-time records, including games played (205), games started (205), hits (231), at-bats (664), doubles (56), triples (18), walks (84) and runs (121).
Kicking camp
YOUNGSTOWN — Former standout YSU and NFL placekickers Jeff Wilkins and Paul McFadden will team up to host the Penguins’ 2008 Kicking Camp which is set to be held July 7-8 at Stambaugh Stadium.
Wilkins, who retired after a 14-year career in professional football in February, has not been able to attend the camp the past few years because of offseason workouts with the St. Louis Rams.

Wilkins spent the final 11 seasons of his career playing for the Rams. He did not miss an extra point from 1998 through 2007 while scoring 1,416 career points.
McFadden was a bare-footed specialist who was a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
He played six seasons in the NFL for three teams and amassed 520 points in his career, converting 160-of-165 point-after attempts and 120-of-175 field-goal tries.

Cures for Cancer
This season, the Howland and Ursuline softball teams held a “Cures for Cancer” softball tournament which included North Allegheny (Pa.) and Cincinnati Ursuline.
With donations matched by Kernan Insurance, the teams were able to raise $1000 to be donated to the American Cancer Society and Hospice of the Valley.
Group to meet
AUSTINTOWN — The Austintown Fitch High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee will meet July 2 at 6:30 p.m.
At that time the group will be finalizing the first class to the hall.
Hardhats to play
YOUNGSTOWN — The Steel Valley Hardhats semi-professional football team will play the Pittsburgh Blue Devils Saturday at South Stadium at 3 p.m.
Admission is $5.
Red Bulls on road
YOUNGSTOWN — The Ohio Red Bulls’ semi-professional football team will hit the road to meet the Beaver County Warriors Saturday in Leetsdale, Pa.
The Red Bulls launched their season on June 14 with a 46-13 victory over the North Coast Vikings in Chardon.
The Red Bulls will play a home game July 5 against the Ohio Invaders of Cleveland at Falcon Stadium in Austintown at 7 p.m.
Sharon Speedway
HARTFORD — Sharon Speedway will resume competition this Saturday with the usual “Fantastic Five” schedule involving sprint cars, modifieds, E-mods, pure stocks and limited sprints.
