Scrappers fall to Doubledays 6-1

Mahoning Valley dropped under .500 in the New York-Penn League.

AUBURN, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers dropped below the .500 mark again with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the division-leading Auburn Doubledays in a New York-Penn League game Monday night.

Auburn’s first-round draft choice, David Cooper, had a solo home run and an RBI double to pace the Doubledays (6-1).

The Scrappers (3-4) had just six hits, two of them by catcher Douglas Pickens, including a double. Mahoning Valley’s only run came in the second inning after singles by Donnie Webb and Isaias Velasquez and a sacrifice fly by Juan Valdes.

The Doubledays’ big inning was the third when they plated three runs, including Cooper’s double. The Scrappers also didn’t help themselves, committing six errors in the contest.

Game two of the three-game series is tonight at 7:05 with left-hander Kaimi Mead set to pitch for the Scrappers.
