MLB ROUNDUP Monday’s games
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brewers 4, Braves 1
ATLANTA — Ben Sheets gave up only four hits in a dominant complete-game performance, and Mike Cameron hit a two-run home run. Sheets (9-1) retired the final 16 batters for his NL-leading third complete game. He struck out seven, and did not walk a batter. Sheets won his fifth straight decision and is 6-0 in 10 road starts.
INTERLEAGUE
Mariners 5, Mets 2
NEW YORK — Seattle’s Felix Hernandez hit the first grand slam by an AL pitcher in 37 years, then departed with a sprained ankle before he could qualify for a win. Hernandez connected off Johan Santana with two outs in the second inning to give Seattle a 4-0 lead. The opposite-field shot to right-center was the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history, and the first slam by an AL hurler since Cleveland’s Steve Dunning went deep against Oakland’s Diego Segui on May 11, 1971, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Diamondbacks 2, Red Sox 1
BOSTON — Dan Haren was dominant over seven shutout innings, limiting Boston to just two hits and outpitching Josh Beckett. The Diamondbacks have won just seven of their past 21 road games. Boston dropped to 1-3 on its current six-game homestand after winning 19 of its previous 22 in Fenway Park. Haren (8-4) walked one and fanned five in his best outing of the season, winning his fifth consecutive start.
Angels 3, Nationals 2
WASHINGTON — Garret Anderson’s eighth-inning single drove in the go-ahead run as Los Angeles rallied to beat Washington. The Nationals committed a series of errors in the eighth inning that led to a pair of runs and sent them to their sixth loss in seven games. The Angels’ John Lackey allowed six hits and two runs — one earned — in eight innings, striking out six and walking one. Lackey (5-1) has lasted at least seven innings in all eight of his starts after missing the early part of the season due to injury. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 31st save.
Royals 8, Rockies 4
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Brian Bannister picked up his third straight victory and Mark Teahen hit a three-run homer as Kansas City won for the eighth time in nine games. The Royals’ hot streak has all come against National League clubs, and their 10-3 record is the best in interleague play. Bannister (7-6), who is 3-0 in his last six starts, did not allow a hit until Jeff Baker’s two-out single in the fifth. He matched a career high with six walks before the hit, but still worked through seven innings for the fourth time in his pat five starts. Bannister gave up three hits and three runs, all unearned, while striking out five.
