YOUNGSTOWN — A 14-year-old Austintown boy won the Super Stock Division on Sunday in the Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby.

Joseph Puntel outdistanced runner-up Haleigh Kuebler of Berlin Center in the final heat of the race Sunday morning on Fifth Avenue.

That heat was postponed from Saturday night because of rain and storms.

Forty-five racers participated in this year’s local derby.

Winner of the Stock Division on Saturday was Zachary Krohn of Canfield, and the Masters Division was won by Johanna Kuebler of Berlin Center.

All of the drivers, who ranged in age from 8 to 17, raced down the Fifth Avenue hill across from Youngstown State University at least four times. They were only inches off the blacktop and tried to hold a straight line while reaching speeds estimated at between 30 mph and 35 mph.

An awards banquet for this year’s winners will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Saxon Club on Meridian Road in Austintown.

The winners in each division advance to the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron on July 26.
