Osteopathic medicine

Nicholas Antonio Chiera of Poland received a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Louis J. Tullio Arena, Erie, Pa.

Dr. Chiera is a 1998 graduate of Poland Seminary High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University in 2002.

He is beginning a four-year residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Oakwood Hospital in Trenton, Mich.

Dr. Chiera is the son of Dominic and Bertie Chiera of Poland. His grandparents are Frank and Josephine Lombard of Poland and Alice Chiera of Campbell.

Dentistry degree

Lisa M. Leone, daughter of Dr. Philip and Nancy Leone and the late Jacquelyn Leone, graduated from Ohio State University College of Dentistry with her D.D.S. degree.

Dr. Leone is a 2000 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and graduated from John Carroll University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

She will remain in Columbus and begin a one-year general practice residency at Ohio State University Hospital.

Her father is a 1978 OSU dental school graduate and currently practices general dentistry in Austintown.

Medical degree

Howard C. Edwards Jr. of Vienna has received his medical degree from Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine.

Dr. Edwards is a graduate of Mathews High School in Vienna. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and biomedical humanities from Hiram College. He earned his master’s degree in bioethics from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland.

He is in an internal medicine residency at Kettering Medical Center, Kettering.

He is the son of Howard and Barbara Edwards of Cortland.

LAWYERS

Ohio State degrees

Three local people have earned their law degrees from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. They are Garrett M. Cravener, Erica Leigh Berencsi and Erin Elizabeth Wright.

Cravener has accepted a position with Eastman & Smith Ltd. in Columbus. He is a 2001 graduate of Hubbard High School. In 2005, he received his bachelor’s degree in family resource management from OSU.

He is the son of Gary and Joyce Cravener of Masury.

Berencsi has accepted a federal government honor’s program appointment with the National Labor Relations Board in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

She is a 2000 graduate of Girard High School and received bachelor’s degrees in English and sociology from Georgetown University. She is the daughter of Karen and Thomas Komlanc of Girard.

Wright has accepted a position with the firm of Swanson, Martin & Bell LLP in Chicago. While at the law school, she was editor-in-chief of I/S: A Journal of Law Policy for the Information Society.

She is a 2002 graduate of Liberty High School. Before entering law school, she received her bachelor’s degree with honors in political science from OSU in 2005. She is the daughter of Dale Wright of Liberty and Judy and Rich Hideg of Warren.

PH.D

Biological sciences

Laura J. Marinelli has received her doctorate from the molecular, cellular and developmental biology graduate program in the Biological Sciences Department at the University of Pittsburgh.

The focus of her studies has been to characterize a domain that breaks down the bacterial cell wall and is found within a tail protein of a number of bacteriophages, viruses that infect and kill bacterial cells.

While working toward her degree, she received the Ivy McManus award for outstanding performance by a first year student in 2002 and was awarded the Andrew Mellon Fellowship for the 2005-06 academic year. She also had presented the results of her research at a number of national meetings.

Marinelli received her bachelor’s degree in biology, and graduated summa cum laude from Youngstown State University in 2001. She was a 1997 graduate of Boardman High School. She will continue her research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, where she plans on pursuing her studies in bacteriophage genetics.

She is the daughter of Joe and Jane Marinelli of Boardman.
