Celebration set for the Brookses on 50th anniversary

X CANFIELD — Mr. and Mrs. Loran Brooks, 6104 Gibson Road, who were united in marriage June 15, 1958, at Austintown Community Church, were surprised with a shower of cards and messages as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding.

The anniversary will also be celebrated in July in Michigan, where they will be honored by their family, Loran and Margaret Brooks and their children, Aaron, Ethan and Madeline, all of Shanghai, China; Cheryl and Al Montag and their sons, Matthew and Nicholas, all of Loveland; and Cindy and Jim Corll and their children Joe, Zachary, Jacob and Katelynn, all of Rochester Hills, Mich.

Mrs. Brooks, the former Joyce Hoyt, is president of the Governing Board of Mahoning County Educational Service Center, and a member of the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Board of Education and the Board of Visitors of Beeghly College of Education.

She was a teacher with Greenford and Canfield school districts, and the director of personnel for Mahoning County Office of Education and Youngstown City Schools. After retiring she was assistant dean at YSU Beeghly College of Education and the coordinator of MAC Tech Prep and Mahoning Valley Vision for Education projects.

She is a past president and member of Canfield Republican Women’s Club.

Mr. Brooks was in the metallurgical research and quality control department of Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. Displayed at the Museum of Industry and Labor are fragments he preserved from the last roll of steel processed by the company in December 1977.

A well-known farmer, he has served as director for the National Corn Growers Association and is a member of the Ohio Corn Growers Association Board. He was the first Mahoning County representative on the Farmers Home Administration Board, and served two terms on the Federal Farm Service Agency Board for Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

He is on the Ohio State Extension Advisory Board, is chairman of Canfield Township Zoning Board of Appeals, and is a committeeman with Canfield Township Republican Precinct 8. For 48 years he was involved with Canfield Fair, including initiation and leadership of the night maintenance crew and for many years as building supervisor for the hay and grain building and machinery display.

Mr. and Mrs. Brooks are members of Austintown Community Evangelical Covenant Church, Mahoning County Farm Bureau and Mahoning County Agricultural Society. They are life members of Youngstown State University Alumni Society.
