Inside Boxing show

AUSTINTOWN — Longtime boxing official Harry Meshel will be honored during Wednesday’s edition of “Inside Boxing,” with Mike Cefalde at O’Donald’s Pub, which airs from 6 p.m. to 8 on WBBW-AM 1240.

Former Youngstown boxers Jeff Lampkin and Greg Richardson will attend, as will Kelly Pavlik’s father, Mike, Sr.

Also, longtime Fitch baseball coach Rich Coppola will be honored during the July 2 show.

Both events are open to the public.

Szakacs selects

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Liberty High graduate Jessie Szakacs has chosen Westminster as her choice for college and volleyball, Titans coach Tammy Swearingen announced.

Szakacs, a 5-7 setter, was twice picked to the first-team All-Trumbull Athletic Conference squad and she was also first-team all-district in 2007. The daughter of Michael and Wendy Szakacs, plans to major in elementary education/special education.

Westminster’s 2007 volleyball team posted a 23-12 record, won the President’s Athletic Conference and qualified for the NCAA Div. III tournament for the first time.

Youth bowling meeting

AUSTINTOWN — The U.S. Bowling Congress’ Youngstown Youth Association will hold its annual meeting on June 24 at Wedgewood Lanes.

The meeting will start at 6:30. All sanctioned youth over the age of 14 and adults working with youth leagues are encouraged to attend. The election of officers for the 2008-2009 season will take place.

Huddle scheduled

WARREN — The Warren Sports Hall of Fame Coaches Huddle will take place July 27 at DiLucia’s.

Doors open at 6 p.m.; high school football coaches will make their presentations beginning at 7.

Participating schools will be Brookfield, Champion, Girard, Howland, Hubbard, LaBrae, Liberty, Mineral Ridge, Newton Falls, Niles, Warren Harding and Warren JFK.

•Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn. — Stewart Cink birdied the final two holes Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round.

Cink followed his opening rounds of 66 and 64 with a 5-under 65 to reach 15-under 195 on the TPC River Highlands, the best 54-hole score of his career.

Heath Slocum (64) was second, and defending champion Hunter Mahan (67), Vijay Singh (64), Kenny Perry (65), Tommy Armour III (65) and Kevin Streelman (62) were 12 under.

On a day when 24 golfers shot 66 or better, 17 players ended up within five shots of the lead going into today’s final round. The average score of 68.2 was the best ever for a third round.

•Wegmans LPGA

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Norwegian star Suzann Pettersen shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 to open a three-stroke lead over Morgan Pressel and South Koreans Eun-Hee Ji and Inbee Park after the third round of the Wegmans LPGA.

Pettersen, a five-time tour winner in 2007, had a 14-under 202 total. The 28-year-old Pettersen is winless this season, but has finishes of second, third and ninth in 10 events and is ninth on the money list.

Skateboard results

BALTIMORE — Ryan Sheckler won the Skateboard Park event Saturday in the Panasonic Open, beginning his bid for a fourth consecutive Dew Cup title.

The 18-year-old Sheckler, from San Clemente, Calif., landed a succession of technical tricks on the rails during the event to earn an average score of 94.65. Paul Rodriguez of Tarzana, Calif., was second at 89.80, followed by Chicago’s Chaz Ortiz with 89.55.

The four-day competition is the first of five stops of the AST Dew Tour that features skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross. Sunday’s action features Freestyle Motocross and BMX Park finals.

Basketball recruit

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana coach Tom Crean keeps reeling in recruits.

On Saturday, Malik Story, a 6-foot-5 guard who originally committed to Southern Cal, said he would attend Indiana this fall. Story averaged 14.7 points last season at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia after scoring 13 points a game as a junior at another high school.

He chose the Hoosiers over Kentucky, Oregon, Arizona and Georgetown. He also considered Marquette, where Crean coached until Indiana hired him in April.

Miller apologizes

NEW YORK — NBC Sports golf analyst Johnny Miller apologized for his description of U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate, saying the comments had “absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity.”

Mediate, a 45-year-old Pennsylvanian of Italian heritage, held a one-stroke lead over Tiger Woods during the fourth round Sunday. Miller said Mediate “looks like the guy who cleans Tiger’s swimming pool.”

He also said, “Guys with the name ’Rocco’ don’t get on the trophy, do they?”

Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan received minor injuries and his horse, Vinstar, was euthanized after the horse took a spill Saturday during the first race at Churchill Downs.

Bridgmohan was taken to a Louisville hospital, but had no broken bones or serious injuries, an agent for the jockey said.

According to a release from the racetrack, the 29-year-old jockey was dropped near the sixteenth pole in the six-furlong sprint when the horse appeared to take a bad step.

Kreuziger wins trial

KLAUSENPASS, Switzerland — Roman Kreuziger took control of the Tour de Suisse cycling race Saturday by winning an individual time trial in the mountains.

The Liquigas rider has a 48-second overall lead with one stage left.

The 22-year-old Czech finished the 16-mile eighth stage from Altdorf to Klausenpass in 1 hour, 22 seconds.
