Super Nationals to cause traffic problems in Salem

Authorities say to avoid downtown area if possible.

SALEM — Authorities have said people can look forward to “a huge influx” of vehicles through Sunday evening.

The city expects — and gets — the patrons from the Steel Valley Super Nationals that began Friday and ends Sunday at the Quaker City Raceway.

Last year, State Street throughout the city was a line of vehicles on Saturday.

Police Chief Robert Floor said extended traffic backups should be expected. He advised that people who don’t want to be caught up in traffic should avoid the downtown.

The city, the chief said, will have a “no tolerance” policy for drivers who want to peel their tires or burn out on the streets. Authorities have said that creates a hazard for pedestrians who are watching the cars cruise.

Floor said there are a couple of burnout pits in the city during the event where drivers can rev their machines to safely show their performance.

City Service Director Steve Andres said he expected there would be minor traffic and other problems that would get straightened out.

Audrey Null, the executive director of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber has never estimated how much money the Super Nationals bring to the city.

Restaurants, bars, convenience stores and gas stations get much of the business, she said. But some merchants do well, especially if they are doing something special during the weekend.
