VINDICATOR STAFF/WIRE REPORT

BATAVIA, N.Y. — In its first four games this season the Mahoning Valley Scrappers have just about seen it all.

The Scrappers have won a close one, lost a blowout and, Friday night, suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in 11 innings to the Batavia Muckdogs in their first road game of the season.

Mahoning Valley (2-2) has struggled offensively the past two games, getting just five hits on Thursday and managing just three hits Friday off four Muckdog pitchers.

Scrappers reliever Carlos Arias suffered the defeat on Friday and he had nobody to blame but himself.

Arias, who came on in the ninth inning, blanked Batavia in the ninth and 10th innings, but in the bottom of the 11th he allowed a leadoff single by Edwin Gomez. Arias then threw back-to-back wild pitches, allowing Gomez to reach third with nobody out. He scored the winning run when Jose Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Batavia, which won for the first time in four games, had only seven hits, but Colt Sedbrook had three of them including a triple.

The Scrappers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Brock Simpson and Corteze Armstrong each had an RBI. Armstrong, Donnie Webb and Isaias Velasquez had the only hits for Mahoning Valley,

The two teams will play the second game in the three-game series tonight at 7:05.
