22-month-old burned in campfire mishap

BERLIN CENTER — A 22-month-old child was burned over 20 percent of his back Saturday morning when he tripped and fell backward into a campfire at Berlin Lake Campgrounds.

Chief Rick Peppel of the Berlin Township Fire Department said the child was flown by helicopter to the Akron Childrens Hospital Burn Center, where he remained on Saturday night. The chief said the child, whose name he did not immediately know, should recover.

He explained three children were with their parents and playing at about 10 a.m. when the 22-month-old fell backward into the fire. He said there was no indication of negligence.
