Second night results in second win

By Chuck Housteau

Jeremie Tice and Ramon Hernandez were the big bats in the seventh inning.

NILES — Mahoning Valley Scrappers first-year manager Travis Fryman said he is having as much fun coaching as he could ever have imagined on a ball field.

That’s saying a lot for a guy who had a spectacular 13-year career as a player for the Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians.

Fresh off his first win as skipper of the Scrappers Tuesday night, Fryman watched his young team’s bats come alive late in the game Wednesday to pull out a 6-3 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters.

“We have a pretty good group of hitters and we swang the bats well,” Fryman said.

The Scrappers (2-0) were trailing Williamsport 3-2 in the seventh inning when Mahoning Valley erupted for three runs on an RBI triple by third baseman Jeremie Tice and a two-run homer over the left field fence by Ramon Hernandez off Williamsport reliever Richard Austin.

“The game was tied and we had a runner on third,” Hernandez who hit six home runs last year for the Lake County Captains. “I got a fastball and just wanted to hit it hard to get the runner home so we could take the lead.

“I hit it really good and it was a home run.”

That gave the Scrappers a 5-3 lead and reliever Mike McGuire came in to pitch the final two innings for the save.

Mahoning Valley added a final run in the eighth on an RBI double by designated hitter Juan Valdes who had two doubles and a single in three at bats.

Valdes returned to the Scrappers after a productive year here last season when he batted nearly .350.

Fryman said the Scrappers played well but couldn’t string anything together until the late innings.

“We had some hits early,” Fryman said. “We just didn’t get them at the times when we needed them.”

Mahoning Valley got strong pitching performances from four different hurlers.

Starter Guido Fonseca, a 12th round draft pick out of Northern Iowa pitched the first three innings and gave up two runs in the third inning.

He struck out five batters in the first two innings before tiring and allowing the Crosscutters to take the early lead.

The Scrappers tied the game in the sixth after a leadoff single by first round draft pick Lonnie Chisenhall.

Chisenhall moved to second on a walk and scored on a fielders choice grounder by Ryan Blair and a throwing error.

Catcher Doug Pickens drove in Blair with his second single of the game to tie the contest at 2-2.

Williamsport took the lead 3-2 off of MV reliever Wilfredo Ramirez on an RBI single by Jeremy Hamilton.

“We got some solid pitching tonight,” Fryman said. “I learned one thing as a player and that is that good pitching is a requirement to win.”

Ramirez earned the win after the Scrappers rallied to win.

“This is just as much fun as I’ve ever had playing,” Fryman said. “Playing is such an internal thing but the role of manager is very rewarding to see others get so much out of this game and enjoying themselves.”
