National Science Foundation chief to visit YSU

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Arden Bement, director of the National Science Foundation, will visit Youngstown State University Monday to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new chemistry lab.

Bement will speak on the work of the NSF and its funding as well as meet with faculty and students who will present him with their research.

The NSF, along with U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, played a critical role in procuring the funds for the new lab, which already played a significant role in analyzing the chemical compounds in Heparin, an anti-coagulant, on behalf of the Food and Drug Administration. The research done at YSU helped in the FDA’s Heparin investigation.

Bement and Ryan will join YSU officials at 11 a.m. for a ribbon cutting and walkthrough of the new chemistry lab on the fifth floor of Ward Beecher Hall.
