Community events set for Youngstown

Need something to do on Saturday? Head to Youngstown.

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — The city is sponsoring a variety of events on Saturday for community members.

At 9:30 a.m. near the flagpole at Wick Park, a celebration is set for the designation of Youngstown as the newest Tree City USA in Ohio.

A demonstration of the i-Tree computerized system by city forester Dave Sturtz will show how the street tree population within the city will be inventoried and surveyed.

This demonstration is one step in the “gray to green transformation” from the Youngstown 2010 Citywide Plan.

The Wick Park Revitalization Project is having its community meeting at 10 a.m., at the Park Vista community room on Fifth Avenue, immediately after the Tree Day event.

Members of Defend Youngstown and Youngstown CityScape will be at the meeting to share information about the history of Wick Park, its current conditions and restrictions, as well as community goals set for the park.

No Saturday event would be complete without a summer kick-off.

The North Side Pool, which opened to the public Wednesday, is having a community day at noon. Residents are invited to meet elected officials, community leaders and neighbors from the entire city.

From noon to 1 p.m. the pool will be reserved for adult swimmers.

The first 400 children 18 and under are admitted for free, and music and entertainment will be provided.

Events for the day are sponsored by Youngstown City Council, Youngstown Park and Recreation Department, Youngstown Weed and Seed, Increase the Peace, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Third Ward Block Watch Organization, Youngstown MYCAP, and Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League.
