Borts Pool closes

over pump problem

YOUNGSTOWN — Borts Pool on the city’s West Side didn’t even make a splash before a broken back flow pump caused it to close 45 minutes after it opened.

The problem was discovered late Tuesday. City maintenance workers attempted to fix the pump, but gave up at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, said Jason Whitehead, the city’s park director. The pool opened for the season at 1 p.m. that day. With low temperatures no one swam at the pool, Whitehead said.

The pool will be closed for about two weeks because the pump has to be custom-made, he said. A new pump will cost about $5,000. This was the first time since 2004 that the city’s two pools, Borts and the North Side Pool, both opened as scheduled.
