Fatal Mercer Co. crash

MERCER, Pa. — A man was killed in a two-car crash Monday afternoon on Pa. Route 173 near Sheakleyville Road in French Creek Township, Pennsylvania State Police in Mercer reported.

Andrew Pawlish, 81, of Carlton, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred at 2:05 p.m. as Pawlish was southbound on the road, crossed the center line and struck a northbound car, police said.

Maxwell Johnson, 42, of Kennerdell, Pa., was the driver of the other car. He was not injured, police said.

Crash victim ID released

TRANSFER, Pa. — Police have released the name of the victim in a fatal two-car accident Sunday on state Route 18.

Douglas H. Ecker, 84, of Kinsman Township, Trumbull County, was killed about 1 p.m. at the intersection of Route 18 and Rutledge Road. He was crossing Route 18 when he was hit by a car driven by Jeremy L. Ferrell, 33, of Greenville.

Police are investigating the accident.

Gas Mart robber sought

YOUNGSTOWN — Police continue looking for a man who committed an armed robbery Monday night at the South Avenue Gas Mart on the corner of South Avenue and Dewey Avenue.

A man told police he was pumping gas at the business around 9:15 p.m. when he was approached by a male who pulled a handgun from his waistband and demanded a gold chain from around the victim’s neck.

The suspect then ran on South Avenue and was last seen near Pasadena Avenue.

Sharon man robbed

SHARON, Pa. — A 22-year-old Sharon man was surrounded by four men and robbed at gunpoint as he was walking home through a city alley, police reported.

The robbery happened at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. The men, wearing bandannas over their faces, forced him to the ground. One pointed a shotgun at him, police said. They stole his wallet and cell phone, then fled.

Sports program planned

BOARDMAN — Leslie J. Bonci, director of sports medicine nutrition for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Center for Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, will present a program on sports nutrition at 7 p.m. today at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, Boardman Branch, 7680 Glenwood Ave.

All Boardman coaches, athletes and their parents are welcome to attend the free event, sponsored by the Boardman Girls Soccer Boosters. Reservations are required, however. Call (330) 261-3146.

Bonci is sports dietitian for the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Athletics, and is a nutrition consultant for several professional sports teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates.

Mosquito spraying

LIBERTY — Township officials have contracted with Alexander’s Pest Control to fog for mosquitoes June 23-24. The fogging will begin at dusk and continue until about 2 a.m. In the event of bad weather, the fogging will take place on subsequent evenings.
