Iacobucci honored

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown St. redshirt freshman outfielder Joe Iacobucci has earned honorable mention honors on the All Ping! Freshman baseball Team.

Iacobucci (Boardman) batted a team-high .369 and tied for the team lead in RBIs with 33.

Teammate Tom Clayton earned the same honor last season in the first year of the All Ping! accolades.

Iacobucci previously earned Second Team All-Horizon League honors as well as being named to the league’s all-newcomer team.

He ranked seventh in the conference in batting average, and his .375 average against league opponents ranked 10th.

Iacobucci played in 52 games and had at least two hits in 17 contests, including two four-hit affairs against Kent State and IUP.

Howland Hall of Fame

HOWLAND — The Howland High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct 12 members at the homecoming football game on Sept. 26.

The new class includes Bill Burke, Dr. Rex Whiteman, David Walker, Mark Hocevar, Jane Price, Marlin Bartholomew, Chris Mikola, Nicole Marino, Jack Lazor, David Wise, Terry Pierman and Pete Prokop.

YOUNGSTOWN — Eight local officials umpired games in the state prep softball and baseball tournaments.

Jim Ferraro, John Vicarel, John Mang and Bob Wirey umpired in the state softball tournaments.

Working the baseball tournaments in Columbus was Greg Patoray, Harry Groner, Mike O’Neil and Ken Mills.

YOUNGSTOWN — Area college football official Rob Luklan has officiated some semi-professional games in the Italian football league.

Sevenich to compete

COLUMBIANA — Ryan Sevenich of Columbiana will compete with the Encounter Sports Team in the Chicago Open Paintball Tournament next week.

Sevenich is a student at Youngstown State.

Titans earn praise

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. SEmD There were 38 Westminster College student-athletes who earned recognition on the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll for the spring semester.

The honor roll honors student-athletes who have earned a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale during their semester of competition.

Pair recognized

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City natives Mark Mangino and Jack Zduriencik will be honored during a parade Saturday downtown.

Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo, along with other local officials, will participate in the festivities and recognize Mangino and Zduriencik for their accomplishments in sports.

Mangino, head football coach at Kansas, was named the 2007 Associated Press Coach of the Year as Kansas finished the season ranked No. 7 in the final AP and USA Today polls.

Zduriencik, special assistant to the general manager and director of amateur scouting for the Milwaukee Brewers, was named the 2007 Major League Baseball Executive of the Year — marking the first time the award was given to anyone other than a president or general manager.

Checkup goes well

HOUSTON — The prognosis for Yao Ming’s left foot is “very good,” but it remains uncertain whether the Houston Rockets’ center will be cleared to play in time for a pre-Olympics tournament, his agent said Monday.

Agent John Huizinga said Yao had a checkup Monday that went well, but disputed reports that his client would play July 17-20 in the Stankovic Cup, a pre-Olympics tournament in Hangzhou, China.

FC Dallas hires coach

FRISCO, Texas — FC Dallas has hired SMU’s Schellas Hyndman as its new coach.

Hyndman will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday as the replacement for Steve Morrow, who was fired May 21. Marco Ferruzzi was the interim coach.

Hyndman entered the 2007 season second among active Division I men’s soccer coaches with a record of 466-123-49. His teams made the NCAA tournament 30 times in 31 seasons — all seven years at Eastern Illinois, and 23 of his 24 seasons at SMU.
