Johnson, Tomko lead Wharmby


STRUTHERS — Wharmby Sports collected 14 hits and used a seven-run fifth inning to defeat the Youngstown Express 12-6 at Cene Park Monday in Class B League action.

Cory Johnson triggered the Wharmby attack with three hits and Mike Tomko hit a pair of triples for the second straight game. He also drove in three runs for Wharmby (4-3).

Ben Bechtol and Brian Szabo added two hits each while Ryan Ward tossed 42‚Ñ3 innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Losing pitcher Dan Eich went the distance and added two hits, as did Joe Stravinsky, Kyle Jones and Eric Walters for the Express (4-12).

Dave Sugar Excavating 5, Simon Roofing 3

STRUTHERS — Dave Sugar Excavating (13-4) scored four times in the third inning and went on to defeat Simon Roofing.

Todd Kibby drove in two runs, while Mike Olenych (3-1) struck out five in five innings of work to pick up win. Jake Kucek picked up the save.

Brett Cooper had a single and a double for Simon Roofing (11-5).

Late Sunday

Rondinelli Tuxedo 14, Livi Steel 7

STRUTHERS — Bo Slemons, Jason Bagoly, Jaymee Shephard and Kevin McCulloh sparked Rondinelli Tuxedo (13-2) with two hits apiece. Corey Nesbitt (3-0) worked six innings to pick up the win.

Taylor Englebaugh hit a home run while Bobby Herberger hit a triple and single for Livi Steel (8-7).

Simon Roofing 8, Wharmby Sports 6

STRUTHERS — Simon Roofing scored all eight of its runs in the fourth inning and held off Wharmby’s rally.

Rick Sommers, and Dante Abbas each had two hits and drove home two runs while Evan Bollinger added two singles for Simon (11-4). Robert Franks (3-0) allowed one unearned run in the first five innings for the win. Mike Tomko hit two triples and drove home three runs for Wharmby’s (3-13).

Class AA League

Youngstown Metros 5, Tri County 4

YOUNGSTOWN — The Metros scored the winning run in the bottom of the eight inning as Joe Iacobucci singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a walk.

Jim Pasquine came on in relief in the eighth and pitched a shutout inning with two strikeouts for the win. Don Sylvestry hit a pair of singles.

Tri County scored all its runs in the fifth inning on three errors, sacrifice, hit batter and a bunt single by Tim Grantz.

Warren AA League

Mahoning Valley Knights 7, Jamestown Redbirds 6

WARREN — Mahoning Valley Knights stayed unbeaten (8-0) as it scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rick DiMuzio and ‚àÜosh Swipas each hit a double. Tom Williams came on in relief for the Knights in the top of the seventh and pitch a scoreless inning for the win.

Redbirds 7, P.I. I. Express 6

WARREN — Two errors in the seventh inning cost Express (2-9) as Jamestown Redbirds of the Mercer Couty League prevailed. Bert Grabman paced the losers with three hits. Dave Patrick hit a double and single.

New Hamburgh Hounds 3, Champion Marlins 2

WARREN — The Champion Marlins, behind 3-0, rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the New Hamburgh Hounds of the Mercer County League held on. Doug Wajda had a pair of hits for the Marlins (6-4).

Elite Shockers 3, New Hamburgh 2

WARREN — The Shockers (6-3) scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Craig Dobos hit a double and two singles. Tony Pozega, who scored the deciding runs, had a pair of hits and two stolen baases. Nick Backo hit a home run for the Hounds.

Yard Cardinals 28, CAK Indians 0

WARREN — The Cardinals scored seven runs in the first inning, eight in the second and nine in the fourth. They also had 25 hits. Bruce Brewster and Brian Kochunas had four hits apiece. Winning pitcher Don Lee had three hits, scored four times and drove in three. Bob Leach of the Indians collected three hits.
