“How Life Began” (9 p.m., History): Did life begin with the big bang? This special seeks the answer by looking back billions of years before dinosaurs or humans roamed the planet. High-end animation and expert interviews combine to create a picture of the world as populated by single-celled organisms in oceans and on land.

The broadcast also explores theories about life’s beginnings, such as whether lightning struck a pond full of amino acids, or whether life can be created in a laboratory.

“Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal” (10 p.m., A&E): This new weekly series features Chip Coffey, a medium who deals with children who show signs of paranormal abilities. He and Lisa Miller, a psychologist and professor at Columbia University, work with children and their families to help the children strengthen their abilities and cope with conflict.

In the pilot episode, a 14-year-old boy is terrified by the spirits of people and animals on his remote California ranch home. Coffey and Miller introduce him to two other kids who are experiencing paranormal activities.

“Weeds” ( 10 p.m., Showtime): Cable TV’s most addictive comedy returns for its fourth season, and fans are in for a major change of scenery. When we last saw pot-peddling soccer mom Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker), she had just torched her lovely suburban home. Now, Nancy relocates her family near the Mexican border in the beach-side home of her late husband’s father (played by Albert Brooks). Of course, it doesn’t take long for her to jump back into the drug business. Surely more trouble can’t be far behind.
