Aebischer’s open house
POLAND — Aebischer’s Jewelry, located in the Town One Square here, will have a grand reopening Open House Celebration from Thursday through Saturday in recognition of its 80 years in the jewelry industry and the completion of its newly expanded showroom.
The open house will be 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday; and 9:30 am to 3 p.m. Saturday. The store is giving away a $500 gift certificate, but customers must stop in to enter. Light refreshments also will be available.
Aebischer’s Jewelry is owned by Doug Aebischer, who took over as president in 1996. The store originally opened its doors on Bridge Street in Struthers in 1928 by Aebischer’s grandparents John and Johanna Aebischer shortly after arriving in America from Switzerland. Doug Aebischer’s father, Harold, assumed ownership in 1967, and he moved the business to its current location here in May 1976.
Earlier this year, Aebischer’s began an expansion project, which added 950 square feet to their store, considerably increasing its showroom space.
Many plan on giving a gift card to Dad
NEW YORK — More than a third of adults plan to give gift cards for Father’s Day this year, according to a survey from Discover Card — a 10 percent increase from last year.
Meanwhile, the telephone survey of more than 1,000 people found that 52 percent aren’t planning to buy anything for their fathers.
Men anticipate significantly outspending women this year by an average of $40. Guys will dole out about $90 for a present — $20 more than they planned to spend last year.
Friendship does count in the workplace
NEW YORK — It’s always a good idea to be friendly with your boss and colleagues. But does your job depend on it?
According to Paul Dobransky, author of “The Power of Female Friendship,” both men and women are often hired and fired based on the degree of friendship they seem to offer — more so than their experience or productivity.
“We often do not realize the importance of popularity, and how the strength of the friendship we are able to emit in the workplace plays into this hidden process,” said Dobransky, a psychiatrist and business consultant.
In his book, Dobransky examines how friendship affects a woman’s career and family life, as well as the science behind making and keeping close friends and avoiding toxic relationships. As in romantic love, we are drawn to and most compatible with opposite personalities, Dobransky said.
In social situations, including the workplace, individuals are often excluded or shunned by a group because they don’t make others feel good about themselves, according to Dobransky.
