Trumbull County 4-H prepares for camp
The camp is open to children ages 9 to 14.
CORTLAND — Summer weather has finally arrived, and Trumbull County 4-H is busy preparing for another fun-filled week of 4-H Camp from July 27 through Aug. 2.
4-H camps are planned and coordinated by older 4-H teen leaders called 4-H camp counselors. Camp counselors serve as cabin and group leaders during the week and are responsible for 10-12 campers for the week. The counselors help the camp director plan and conduct the camp program. Adult staff includes a camp director, an assistant camp director, two adult chaperons, a camp nurse and permanent camp staff.
This year’s Trumbull 4-H camp theme is “Survivor: Hawaii Style.” The counselors have been busy planning fun theme-based activities, such as scavenger hunts, a Hawaiian luau, nightly team challenges, a storyteller, campfire and more.
Trumbull County 4-H camp also will include some special activity sessions such as outdoor survival skills, photography and bottle rockets. The camp is open to children between the ages of 9 and 14. Campers do not need to belong to 4-H or be Trumbull County residents.
4-H Camp provides an outdoor classroom where young people have a chance to learn skills in outdoor living, recreation, leadership development and decision-making.
Programs include educational and recreational activities such as fishing, canoeing, hiking, crafts, conservation, archery, riflery and swimming. Young people live in cabins consisting of 10-12 campers and teen counselors.
Trumbull County 4-H Camp will be at Camp Whitewood, located in Windsor in Ashtabula County. Cost for camp this year is $200, which includes three meals a day and a snack prepared in accordance with sound nutritional guidelines, lodging in cabins with bunk beds, restrooms with flush toilets and showers nearby, and activities and crafts.
Registration applications can be obtained from the OSU Extension Office, at 520 W. Main St. Suite 1, Cortland, OH 44410, or by going online to the Web site http://trumbull.osu.edu/4H/camp. Registration applications are due July 3 with a $75 deposit.
