AKRON — After the Children’s Miracle Network Celebration telethon broadcast on June 1, Akron Children’s Hospital announced that $2,795,229.57 had been raised through a year’s worth of fund-raising activities.

Top fund-raisers contributing to the Children’s Miracle Network campaign included: “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon with 98.1 WKDD, $1,000,726; Denim and Diamonds, $530,029; Wal-Mart Foundation (which includes Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club), $262,820; Holiday Tree Festival, $221,000; Wine Wishes, $90,426; Friend’s Harness Race Rally, $68,176; Dairy Queen, $62,040.96; Ohio Fire Safety Coalition Golf Outing, $35,000; Circle K, $38,478; and Rite Aid, $22,926.75.

Cancer group’s grants

The American Cancer Society, Ohio Division, recently awarded 24 agencies across Ohio more than $36,000 in Transportation Grants to provide this valuable service. Three agencies in Northeast Ohio received funding. They are: Community Action Rural Transit System (CARTS) in Lisbon (Columbiana County), $3,000; Tri-State Health Services (Prime Time Office on Aging) in Steubenville (Jefferson County), $2,000; and Association for Better Community Development (ABCD, Inc.) in Canton (Stark County), $2,000.

Arthritis seminar

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — To help those with arthritis and their support persons better understand the disease, The Arthritis Foundation, Western Pennsylvania Chapter, and Jameson Health System are offering an arthritis seminar on June 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jameson South Campus, 1000 S. CPR classes

YOUNGSTOWN — CPR/AED (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator) and first aid courses are offered June 25, at the National Safety Council, 25 E. Boardman St. The fee for each class is $32. Call one week before the class to register at (330) 747-8657.

AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Surgery Center has received accreditation from the Ambulatory Care Accreditation Program of the Joint Commission, an independent, nonprofit standards-setting and accrediting body.

Health, fitness seminar

YOUNGSTOWN — The Greater Youngstown Point, 322 Wick Ave., is offering a free health and fitness educational seminar from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Health care professionals will be present information on staying healthy and getting physically fit, and testing will be available for blood pressure, cholesteral screening, blood glucose levels, and bone density.
