Degree in genetics

Eric Rubenstein of Liberty Township has received his doctorate in biochemistry and molecular genetics from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The Grove City College graduate will undertake his postdoctoral work at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., in August. Rubenstein will be investigating the biochemical processes that control protein degradation.

Over the past five years, Rubenstein has undertaken collaborative research in the laboratory of Dr. Martin Schmidt of the University of Pittsburgh.

Rubenstein, who was valedictorian of his graduating class at Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage, Pa., has published five articles in genetics and biochemistry journals while at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vic Rubenstein of Liberty Township. His wife, Lisa, is a native of Indianapolis.

Completed doctorate

Brian Sullivan, formerly of Boardman, has completed his doctorate in physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

During his five-year fellowship, he earned the NASA Space Grant Prize-NH Space Grant Consortium and a teaching award. He is working as a research scientist at the University of New Hampshire at Durham.

His professional interests include theoretical and computational space plasma physics, magnetic reconnection, physics education, computational methods in physics education, turbulence, parallel computing.

Sullivan graduated from Boardman High School in 1999, and he earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and math at Westminster College in 2003.

During the summer of 2002, as a research fellow at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, Narragansett, R.I., Sullivan developed a signal processing code to analyze oceanic turbulence data.

He and his wife, the former Bethany Marsh, live in Dover, N.H. She recently completed a two-year tour with the Peace Corps in Cameroon, Africa, where she taught science.

Sullivan is the son of Joe Sullivan of Boardman and Eva Sullivan of Poland.

DOCTORS

Osteopathic medicine

Nicholas Antonio Chiera of Poland received a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Louis J. Tullio Arena, Erie, Pa.

Dr. Chiera is a 1998 graduate of Poland Seminary High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University in 2002.

He is beginning a four-year residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Oakwood Hospital in Trenton, Mich.

Dr. Chiera is the son of Dominic and Bertie Chiera of Poland. His grandparents are Frank and Josephine Lombard of Poland and Alice Chiera of Campbell.

Named to committee

Judge Mark A. Belinky of Mahoning County Probate Court was named by the Ohio Judicial Conference to the Probate Law and Procedure Committee.

The Ohio Judicial Conference consists of judges throughout Ohio. The conference reviews the operation of the courts of Ohio, encourages uniformity in the application of the law, rules and practice throughout the state and, in general, considers the business and problems pertaining to the administration of justice.

Judge Belinky, of Boardman, was attending the Ohio Association of Probate Judges seminar in Canton.
