Sugar defeats Wharmby; storms postpone rest


STRUTHERS — Dave Sugar Excavating scored six times in the final two innings to defeat Wharmby Sports 9-3 in Class B action Friday at Cene Park.

Joe Borrelli hit two singles, while relief pitcher Justin Shaffer (2-1) threw three scoreless innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win for DSE (11-3). Cory Johnson, Ross Lopez and Mike Tomko had two hits apiece for Wharmby Sports (3-11).

In other action, Roth Brothers and R&J Trucking were tied at 11 in the 10th inning before storms stopped play.

Also, Rondinelli Tuxedo led Action Physical Therapy 2-0 in the second inning. Make-ups will be announced at a later date.

Youngstown Metros 5-13,

Lake Erie Lakers 4-3

YOUNGSTOWN — Strong pitching was the key as Youngstown Metros swept a doubleheader from the Lake Erie Lakers Thursday in Tri-State Collegiate League action at Pemberton Park.

In the first game, Jim Pasquine came on in relief to pitch a scoreless seventh inning with three strikeouts. John Mang had worked the first six innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

The Metros, behind 3-1 with two out in the bottom of the sixth, scored two runs on singles by Joe Iacobucci and Matt Yarab, a double by C.J. Morris and an error.

After the Lakers tied the score (4-4) in the top of the seventh, the Metros’ Mike Hoelzel, advanced to second on a sacrifice and with two out scored on a single by Armani Johnson.

The Metros’ Matt Tucker scattered four hits with 10 strikeouts to pick up the win in the second game. Youngstown pulled away with a eight-run second inning as 14 batters went to the plate.

Armani Johnson hit a double, single and scored three times for the Metros. Matt Yarab hit a double and single and Rich Tisone a pair of singles.

Warren AA League

WARREN — Bret Dutton pitched a three-hitter as the unbeaten Mahoning Valley Knights posted a 1-0 victory over the Champion Marlins in a Warren Class AA League game Thursday.

The Knights (7-0), who are in first place in the Caffie Division standings, scored the only run in the top of the first inning as Mike Carbo reached first base on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a passed ball and scored on Derek Stanton’s single. John Thompson hit a pair of singles.

WARREN — Jeremy Krol hit three singles helping the Shockers (5-3) to their victory as they scored three runs in the first inning and four in the seventh. Kyle Pitts worked a complete game as he allowed only four hits, with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Cecil Haynes hit a pair of singles.
