NFL ROUNDUP News and notes
Giants: Less than four months after winning the Super Bowl, center Shaun O’Hara isn’t happy because he believes a couple of teammates are putting themselves ahead of the team. O’Hara criticized receiver Plaxico Burress for refusing to practice until he gets a new contract and reminded teammates that the Giants won their third Super Bowl by sticking together as a team when things got tough last season. “Either you are with us or you are against us,” O’Hara said between practices. “And I think the players are doing a good job of focusing in on their daily tasks and their jobs, and as long as we all continue to do that, this team will succeed.” Injured tight end Jeremy Shockey, who expressed unhappiness with his role in the offseason, miffed coach Tom Coughlin by staying in the locker room with his sore ankle instead of coming out to the field to watch practice.
Burress then compounded things on Wednesday by demanding a new contract even through he has three years left on his old one. He does not intend to practice until he gets a new deal, and he hinted that he might be a training camp holdout next month.
“Broncos: In March, wide receiver Brandon Marshall cut an artery, a vein, a nerve, two tendons and three muscles in his right arm in an accident at a resort in Orlando, Fla. There was concern he would miss the start of training camp July 24, but Marshall said his right arm has gotten stronger. “I feel pretty good,” he said after the team’s final workout of the three-week camp. “I still have nerve damage, but I’m still going to catch a hundred balls.”
Bengals: Defensive tackle Domata Peko has received a five-year contract extension. Peko was a fourth-round draft pick in 2006. He started every game last season and had 11‚Ñ2 sacks.
Bills: Rookie cornerback Reggie Corner signed with Buffalo. Corner was the second of Buffalo’s two fourth-round picks. He was selected 114th overall out of Akron, where he was a four-year starter and finished with 15 interceptions.
Chiefs: Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with defensive end Trevor Johnson on a one-year contract. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Johnson has 49 tackles and one sack in 38 games with the Rams, Saints and Jets.
