John Cusack takes on McCain in political ad
LOS ANGELES — Why has John Cusack jumped into the political arena with a video saying John McCain is a clone of President George W. Bush who would continue policies Cusack says benefit war profiteers?
“I know my opinion doesn’t matter more than anyone else’s and I just make films,” he told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “But I do feel you have to speak out, and that’s what I’m doing.”
The 30-second video, which went out to members of the liberal political activist group MoveOn.org on Wednesday, began airing on television yesterday. In it, Cusack offers a “pop quiz” to voters, asking them among other things: “Who supports keeping our troops in harm’s way in Iraq but not the bipartisan G.I. bill of rights to support them when they return home?” McCain and Bush both do, Cusack says, adding, “Bet you can’t tell them apart.”

No thanks to Emmy bid, Katherine Heigl says
LOS ANGELES — Katherine Heigl won’t be chewing her manicure at this year’s Emmy ceremony: She says she didn’t seek a nomination because “Grey’s Anatomy” failed to deliver the goods for an award-worthy performance.
Heigl, who was honored as best supporting actress in a drama last year for the ABC series, declined to put her name in consideration for a bid, a spokeswoman for the actress said Wednesday.
“I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization” decided against competing, Heigl said in a written statement provided by her publicist, Melissa Kates, who was contacted by the AP.
