Black bear sighted in Liberty Township
LIBERTY — Township police are tracking a small bear that has been cited in various locations across the area.
Cindy Bogner, township dispatch , said the bear has been described as an 80-pound black bear that appears to be about a year old. She said police had received about 10 calls by Friday afternoon from concerned citizens who had seen the bear and a township officer had also seen the animal.
The bear was last spotted on Belmont and shortly thereafter in the area of Catherine Street.
Police, Bogner said, have been coordinating efforts with Trumbull County Wildlife Management.
Bogner said police have learned that the bear was likely forced to leave its mother and is now lost and looking for food. Police are asking residents to cover all trash and remove any bird feeders from porches or trees.
Bogner said police have been advised to tell residents not to approach the animal and if anyone comes in contact with the bear, back away slowly without running.
Bogner said residents should practice safety and be cautious until officers locate the bear.
“Always be cautious in these situations,” she said.
