MVSD renews contracts

MINERAL RIDGE — Mahoning Valley Sanitary District directors renewed the contracts of Chief Engineer Thomas Holloway and Secretary-Treasurer Alan Tatalovich, giving both 3 percent pay raises.

Holloway’s salary for the 2008-09 fiscal year will be $94,685. Holloway has been MVSD chief engineer since April 2004. He is a former Trumbull County sanitary engineer.

Tatalovich, who has been secretary-treasurer since 1990, will earn $72,100. He has been an MVSD employee since 1987.

The MVSD operates Meander Reservoir and is the water service provider for Youngstown and Niles.

Farmers’ market

HOWLAND — The Howland Township Farmers’ Market will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the township gazebo on East Market Street, across from Giant Eagle.

The open-air market will feature fresh produce, sweets, baked goods, breads, crafts produced by local artisans and a variety of annual and perennial plants.

Public hearing on tolls

SHARON, Pa. — U.S. Rep. Phil English, R-3rd, will host a public hearing on the state’s proposal to charge tolls on Interstate 80 and the economic impact that would have.

English is supporting efforts in Washington to halt the plan. He’ll be joined at the hearing by U.S. Rep. John Mica of Florida, the ranking Republican on the House Transportation Infrastructure Committee. Testifying will be local government officials, business leaders and employers.

The hearing will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Sharon City Council chambers at the municipal building.

Sewer repair financing

NILES — City Auditor Charles Nader said he hopes to get a low rate when the city borrows $2 million to finance repairs to the city’s interceptor sewers. Nader expects to have the ordinance advertising for bids on the notes ready for council by next week’s meeting.

It can’t come soon enough, said Randy Fabrizio, superintendent of wastewater treatment. “We have acute problems in the system,” Fabrizio said.

The superintendent said the city should be able to enter into a contract by August and see the project completed by next March.

Preschool graduation

YOUNGSTOWN — The Center for Community Empowerment, 1420 Dogwood Lane, will have its ninth annual preschool graduation at noon Saturday.

The guest speaker is Catherine Dorbish, principal of North Elementary School. The graduates are Laniyah Decembly, Artis Gillam, Cameron Madison, Trinity Moore, TreVes Moore, Mia Robles, DaVeon Sutton, Key Asia Thompson, Raheen Traylor and Walnisha Walker.

Postal worker finds man

YOUNGSTOWN — A postal worker delivering mail to a house in the 1100 block of Inverness Avenue on the South Side called police after seeing an elderly man lying on the living room floor Tuesday afternoon.

The 91-year-old man did not respond when officers knocked at the door and window.

Firefighters were called in to pry open a door. An ambulance crew then attended to the man, described as disoriented. The man was taken to a hospital.

Theft at rental property

YOUNGSTOWN — A man sent to do some work at a South Side rental property at 162 Brooklyn Ave. on Tuesday discovered the furnace missing, along with the water tank and two window sashes.

The loss was estimated at $1,200. He also found graffiti in an upstairs bedroom, police said.

Missing light fixtures

YOUNGSTOWN — Maintenance workers told police Wednesday that they discovered two antique brass outside light fixtures missing from the AT T Building, 3715 Southern Boulevard on the South Side.

The workers were unsure of the cost to replace the fixtures. The loss is estimated at $1,000. The theft was turned over to the Scrap Theft Unit.
