Police monitor ATV driving

NILES — Niles, Weathersfield Township and Girard police launched a crackdown against illegal use of all-terrain vehicles, arresting five people, one of them a juvenile. One of those arrested during the weekend crackdown was charged with criminal trespass, and the others were charged with operating without a license. State law requires a motorcycle endorsement for all ATV drivers.

“There’s no legal way to ride an ATV in the city unless you’re on private property and have the owner’s permission,” said Bruce Simeone, Niles police chief. He said that he has had numerous calls about ATV racing on Robbins Avenue, Summit Street and North Road, incursions on private property and noise complaints. The chief noted that parents can be arrested if a juvenile is found to violate the state’s ATV laws.

Pa. gasoline e-mail hoax

MERCER, Pa.— An e-mail circulating throughout the state of Pennsylvania warning residents that license plates are being stolen and used to steal gasoline is a hoax, state police said Monday.

The e-mail, said to have been sent out by the department, claims if a license plate is missing, it could mean someone is using it on a different car involved in gasoline thefts. It also claims the owner of the stolen plate could be responsible.

The police department said it didn’t send out the e-mail and the information is false. Anyone who receives it should simply discard it, state police added.
