Accident suspends operations at Warren Steel Holding Co.
WARREN — Steel making was suspended this morning at Warren Steel Holding in Warren Township after molten steel burned a hole in a filled ladle. There were no injuries.
Township Fire Chief Ken Schick said the hole opened about a quarter of the way from the top of the ladle, pouring liquid steel onto the floor of the melt shop of the former Copperweld Steel Co. off Mahoning Avenue. Firefighters were called to the facility shortly after 8 a.m. They could only cool down the area with water.
Schick said some hydraulic and electric lines were burned, but there was no damage estimate. Firefighters were joined by others from Champion and Howland townships.
A message left at the company seeking comment was not immediately returned.
