TORONTO — Carlos Pena homered and Edwin Jackson won back-to-back starts for the first time since April as Tampa Bay beat Toronto. The Rays won for the fourth time in six road games after losing seven straight away from home earlier this month. Jackson (7-7) gave up two runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Yankees 13, Orioles 3
NEW YORK — Bobby Abreu hit a pair of homers while getting a day off from the field and Alex Rodriguez also went deep as New York avoided a three-game sweep. Abreu also doubled and had three RBIs as the designated hitter, and A-Rod and Xavier Nady each had two hits for the Yankees.
Royals 4, Athletics 3, 10 innings.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Jose Guillen drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as Kansas City completed its first three-game sweep in Oakland in 20 years. The Royals last swept the A’s in a series in 1999 in Kansas City, but had not done so in Oakland since June 14-16, 1988.
Angels 9, Red Sox 2
BOSTON — Garret Anderson went 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs and Joe Saunders earned his 14th win as Los Angeles swept error-prone Boston. It was the second three-game sweep in two weeks by the Angels over the Red Sox, who showed little spark during their fifth loss in six games. Reports of trade talks with Florida focusing on a disgruntled Manny Ramirez didn’t make the night any better for Boston.
Rangers 4, Mariners 3
ARLINGTON, Texas — Josh Hamilton hit his team-leading 25th homer and collected his major league-best 104th RBI for Texas. Michael Young had the go-ahead RBI with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and rookie Brandon Boggs homered for the Rangers, who have won seven of their last nine against the Mariners.

MINNEAPOLIS — Carlos Quentin hit a home run and had four RBIs to lead Chicago, and Gavin Floyd (11-6) held Minnesota to five hits and one run over 7 2/3 innings. Alexei Ramirez added a three-run homer for theWhite Sox,

MIAMI — Josh Johnson pitched 6 2/3 innings for his first victory in almost two years, and Jeremy Hermida and Cody Ross both tripled in a five-run fourth inning against Mike Pelfrey (9-7), who lost for the first time in his past eight decisions.
Cardinals 7, Braves 2
ATLANTA — Chris Carpenter pitched four solid innings in his first start since April 2007 as St. Louis beat Atlanta. Albert Pujols drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh for the Cardinals and Joe Mather put the game out of reach with a two-run homer in the eighth. Carpenter, who won the NL Cy Young Award in 2005, spent the past year recovering from ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow.

WASHINGTON — Chase Utley homered for the second consecutive game, providing the big blow in a five-run fifth inning for Philadelphia. Shane Victorino provided three hits, three RBIs and three runs, including a solo homer, helping Jamie Moyer (10-6) win his third straight decision.

HOUSTON — Adam Dunn homered twice and Ken Griffey Jr. added a three-run shot as Cincinnati snapped an eight-game skid against Houston.

MILWAUKEE — Ryan Dempster pitched seven superb innings and Ryan Theriot tripled to break open a close game as Chicago beat Milwaukee again.
