Cool summer accessories turn up the heat on style
By HELEN MALANI
In winter, it’s a great pair of boots and a chic scarf-and-glove set.
But during the summer, when we’re wearing as little as possible to combat the heat, just what are the go-to accessories? Not surprisingly, they add little in the way of weather protection but tons in the way of panache.
Sexys shoes: When not choosing a completely flat skimmer (the ubiquitous yet adorable canvas slip-on sneakers) or slightly contoured flip-flop (since we all know the super flat ones are bad news for our tootsies) high, higher and highest is the style of summer shoes.
Try Payless.com for tons of great kicks for everyone on your shopping list. One of my favorites for under $15 is a 3.5-inch sling-back seersuckers with a peep toe and hidden platform. Fun, flirty, cool: summer for your feet.
Trendy tress tamers: Cut your energy bill and give yourself a little extra time in the morning by banning your blow-dryer for the summer. OK, special occasions exempted. Instead, embrace whatever kinks humidity or a little sweat brings about in your locks and enhance them. Try a relatively inexpensive, yet fashion-forward store like forever21.com and stock up on several stylish hair options — from super skinny metallic bands to large cloth turbanesque head wraps to tiny, shiny flower pins — all for under $15.
Bold, bright bags: If you’re doing it right, summer means heading outdoors and going somewhere. Somewhere can be the pool to relax, around town for some errands, or for a quick outing after work. Whatever you’re doing, lug your stuff and brighten your look with a large and cheerful tote. Try a polka dot recycled plastic tote from walmart.com. It’s just $8, and the delightful blue-and-green dots are sure to perk up any summer outfit.
A final necessity for both sexes? Aviator sunglasses. They’re showing up everywhere, from the red carpet to the pages of high-fashion magazines to the supermarket. Luckily, you can find them for a song at urbanboundaries.com.
