Canfield 10-year-olds in 9-5 win


They defeated Wheelersburg in state tournament action in Ashtabula.

ASHTABULA — The Canfield 10-year-old baseball team defeated Wheelersburg, 9-5, in the state tournament Wednesday.

Luke Kelty pitched a good game for Canfield, and was backed at the plate by Greg Parella, who had two doubles.

Vince Ferrier and Drew Potesta also had hits while Vince D’Alesio and Ferrier turned two double.

Tuesday, Canfield defeated Avon, 14-6, as Drew Potesta hit two home runs and a double.

D’Alesio hit a double and single while Kelty hit a double and two singles. Ryan Head and Cody Dye had two hits each.

Canfield lost an earlier game to Maumee, 4-0.

Poland 11s

CAMBRIDGE —Poland fell to Avon, 8-7, to end its state tournament run in the Little League 11-year-old baseball bracket.

Lead by Kiernan Kiske led Poland with two hits and three RBIs, while Ricky Svetlak hit a two-run homer.

Kevin Cicuto added two hits, while Dom Lipari, Marty Malenic, Austin Wilson, Mark Passarello, Nick Romeo and Logan Morse all had one. Jake Hawkins and Adam Knight stood out defensively.

Warren AA

WARREN — Derek Stanton hit a pair of doubles, Rick DiMuzio added two singles and two RBIs, and Matt DiMuzio and Matt Carhart combined on a five-inning no-hitter to lead the Mahoning Valley Knights over the Trumbull County Predators, 10-0.

Mike Carbo singled twice for the Knights and Josh Swipas hit a double.

Flex Strut 7, Champion Marlins 4

Jim Skiffey had two hits and four RBIs to lead Flex Strut. Adam Morgan added a double, while winning pitcher Aaron Johnstone was helped by Steve Liebel and Anthony Ragozine, who earned a save. Joe Cvenrgos hit a double for Champion.

P.I. I Express 12, Elite Shockers 11

Dave Patrick and Frank Rosile, the winning pitcher, each had a double and a single to lead Express in a shootout. Tom Jones, Mike Carnahan, Dave Tofil and Mike O’Neill all singled twice. O’Neill finished with three RBIs, while Jones and Carnahan each had two. Justin Street had three hits, including a double, for Elite. Craig Dobos added a double and single, and drove in three runs. Mike Johnson added a pair of singles and Josh White two RBIs.
