Mahoning Co. bridge renamed after William Holmes McGuffey

YOUNGSTOWN — Local dignitaries and members of the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society today dedicated a Mahoning County bridge in honor of the man known as “America’s Schoolmaster.”

William Holmes McGuffey grew up in Coitsville and later went on to fame as an educator and author of the McGuffey Eclectic Reader, which became the main elementary school primer in America for decades.

The William Holmes McGuffey Memorial Bridge carries McGuffey Road over Crab Creek, linking the city’s North and East sides.

The county commissioners agreed in July 2007 to name the 628-foot rehabilitated span in McGuffey’s honor.
