Calvary Run Drive to be closed till Sept.

YOUNGSTOWN — Calvary Run Drive between Belle Vista Avenue and Milton Avenue has been closed and will remain closed through early September as part of a stream mitigation project. Motorists will be detoured via Milton Avenue to Price Road to Belle Vista Avenue.

This work marks the beginning of a $1 million project that will enhance the degraded Calvary Run stream located in the Mill Creek Metro Park. The project’s main focus is to improve water quality, stream stability and plant and animal species diversity.

The stream work will begin at Belle Vista Avenue and continue all the way to Lake Glacier. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by October 2009.

Man shot while riding a motor scooter

YOUNGSTOWN — A 20-year-old South Garland Avenue man was shot Sunday evening while riding a motor scooter on South Truesdale Avenue, police said. The victim said he heard gunfire as he approached Shehy Street around 8:15 p.m.

One round struck his front tire and then he felt pain near his right calf and fell off the bike. The shots, fired at him by occupants of a tan of gold- colored car, continued, grazing his right ear, as he ran into a convenience store on Shehy.

The suspects, possibly armed with assault rifles, pursued the victim into the store, where the clerk grabbed two pistols and opened fire, police said. The suspects fled.

The victim refused medical treatment.

Man to face 2nd charge over loud music in car

YOUNGSTOWN — An East Lucius Avenue man who was charged with loud music from a motor vehicle last month was charged again with the same crime over the weekend.

Raymond C. Triplett, 27, had been cruising east on Mahoning Avenue, past Calvary Cemetery, around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when pulled over by a city patrolman. The officer had been parked just inside the entrance to the cemetery on Belle Vista Avenue when he heard music coming from the west, roughly 200 feet away, and then saw the source, a silver Chevrolet Impala.

The officer also cited Triplett for failure to reinstate his driver’s license after a suspension. The car he was driving was released to its owner.

Triplett was arraigned Monday in municipal court and will be back in court Sept. 5 for a pretrial.

In the June 20 loud music charge, Triplett pleaded no contest in municipal court and will be sentenced Sept. 4. He faces up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
