New Castle detective dies from his injuries

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A city police detective has died of injuries suffered in an accident July 13.

Detective Robert Lepore, 44, died at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center Presbyterian from injuries he sustained in an automobile crash at 8:15 p.m. July 13 in Union Township.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, he was driving a 2007 Ford Expedition northbound on Atlantic Avenue near Sunny Avenue when the vehicle struck a utility pole, cutting the pole off at its base. The vehicle continued traveling north until it struck a tree, where it came to a rest.

Lepore was flown by helicopter to the hospital.

He was off duty and driving his private vehicle at the time of the crash.

Green Team opens new drop-off centers

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Recycling Division (Green Team) has opened new drop-off centers for recyclable materials in Boardman and Struthers.

The sites are at the county Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities workshop, 160 Marwood Circle, Boardman, and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 480 Youngstown-Poland Road, Struthers.

The Marwood site is open daylight hours Monday through Saturday, and the Struthers site is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

The sites accept paper, cardboard, metal food and beverage cans, glass bottles and No. 1 through No. 7 plastics.

Closed to fix culvert

COITSVILLE — Mahoning-Trumbull County Line Road will be closed for a culvert replacement between North Hubbard Road and Coitsville-Hubbard Road on Wednesday and Thursday.

Traffic will be detoured along North Hubbard Road, McGuffey Road and Coitsville-Hubbard Road, the Mahoning County engineer announced.

National Night Out

EAST PALESTINE — The Chamber of Commerce will have its first National Night Out program Aug. 5 along Market Street. Hours are 4 to 8 p.m.

The local event will be in conjunction with America’s Night Out Against Crime, a national effort promoting crime prevention across the country.

The 25-year-old program is intended to unite police and community in an effort to keep communities crime-free.

The local program will include live music by the Figley Family Band, games for kids and free child identification kits. There will also be a pizza cook-off.

Bridge to be closed

EAST PALESTINE — City officials announced the West Street Bridge will be closed beginning Aug. 11.

The structure will remain closed for several months and detours will be posted to assist drivers.
