“Surviving Sharks” (9 p.m., Discovery): Les Stroud, host of Discovery’s Survivorman,” has tips for water safety — does kicking and splashing attract sharks? And he tests popular theories for surviving shark encounters — is it safer to stay in a group if stranded in the ocean, or to tread water alone?
“Day of the Shark” (10 p.m., Discovery): This should be of particular interest to swimmers who have avoided the ocean after dark since the first time they saw “Jaws.” It chronicles six shark attacks that took place at different times of day, to determine if day or night is safer for swimming.
“History Detectives” (9 p.m., PBS): The “History Detectives” are once again on the case, sniffing out facts about artifacts. This time, they check out a metal box that could have been on the ill-fated Hindenburg, a stamp that may be connected to the Bonus Army March on Washington in 1932, and a bell that may have been ringside at a Jack Dempsey boxing match.
“Paranormal State” (10 p.m., A&E): The real-life ghost-busters of “Paranormal State” return for Season 2. The opener has our team investigating a reported haunting in a Pennsylvania home where televisions, lights and fans mysteriously turn off and on and dead animals have been discovered nearby.
