NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City council has made Joseph Scrim’s position as acting public works director permanent. His annual salary will remain $50,000. Scrim became the city’s acting public works director in March after Michael Rooney resigned.

Hired for street projects

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City council has hired Youngblood Paving of Wampum to complete two street projects. Youngblood is to be paid $35,225.20 for milling and paving Boyles Avenue from Logan Street to Neshannock Boulevard and $29,613.35 for milling and paving Carlisle Street from Euclid Avenue to Clen-Moore Boulevard.

Stream mitigation work

YOUNGSTOWN — Beginning Aug. 5, Calvary Run Drive between Bella Vista Avenue and Milton Avenue on the city’s West Side will be closed through Sept. 4 as part of a stream mitigation project. Motorists will be detoured via Milton Avenue to Price Road to Bella Vista Avenue.

This work marks the beginning of a $1 million project that will enhance the degraded Calvary Run stream located in Mill Creek Park. The project’s main focus is to improve water quality, stream stability and plant and animal species diversity.

This project also will modify and improve the stream to resemble what it would be under natural circumstances. The stream will be mitigated beginning at Belle Vista Avenue and continuing all the way to Lake Glacier. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by October 2009.

Spraying for mosquitoes

NILES — The city of Niles will spray for mosquitoes Wednesday after 6 p.m.

Michael Burke, the director of environmental health for the city, advises citizens with respiratory problems to remain indoors and close their windows. Additionally, household pets should be taken indoors, and food should not be prepared or left outdoors during the spraying period.

If it rains Wednesday, the spraying will be rescheduled for Thursday.

Grants for new firetruck

SHARON, Pa. — The Sharon Fire Department and the Transfer Volunteer Fire Department each received $261,250 in federal grants for a new firetruck, said U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd.
