New exhibits on display at Danklef Hill Gallery

SALEM — The Danklef Hill Gallery’s current art exhibits have a different look and feel from any of the gallery’s previous ones. Two artists are being featured: Dave Bullis and MaBruEv. Bullis creates abstract paintings that are full of movement yet inspire contemplation and a sense of order and control. He is also displaying a number of wire mobiles and sculptures carved from cherry and mahogany and finished to a smooth sheen. MaBruEv (Mary and Bruce Everson), use custom jewelry in their exhibit, using a variety of natural stones, beads, Swarovski crystals and unique clasps to create a wide range of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Gallery owners Kris Danklef Moore and Kathleen Hill also have work on display.

The gallery is at 474 E. State St., on the second floor, above the Roastery coffee shop. Hours are 1-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. For more information, go to thedhgallery.com.

Trumbull New Theatre plans 24-hour event

NILES — Trumbull New Theatre’s annual 24 Hour Theatre is next weekend. Interested actors who are able to commit all day Saturday to the event are invited to meet at TNT, 5883 Youngstown-Warren Road, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Actors must be prepared with a memorized one-minute monologue. The directors, who have been predetermined, and writing staff will then handpick their teams. After the teams are set, the directors and actors will go home for the night. The five writing teams will each write a 10-15 minute play to be staged, rehearsed and performed in front of an audience the next day. The performance is Saturday at 8 p.m.

The actors and directors spend Saturday getting acquainted with the script as it unfolds on Saturday night in front of a live audience. Members of the audience will participate in a coin war to vote for their favorite play. Tickets are $3 and are available on a first-come first-served basis. Open mike jam session to begin at Bill’s Place

AUSTINTOWN — Beginning Tuesday, Bill’s Place is starting a weekly open mike night. The event will run from 8-11:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the bar, which is in the Marc’s plaza on Mahoning Avenue. The house band will be Tongue in Groove, featuring cancer survivor Jerry Centofanti on guitar; Jerry DePasquale, drums; Marty Melone, guitar; and Butch McCracken, bass. Tongue in Groove has had open mike nights in the past at Bill’s Place, and has been joined by Steve Marankevich from the Hern Brothers Band; Bob Catlin from Chasin’ the Blues; Anthony Traficanti, Mahoning County commisioner; and Michael Gismondi, bass player for Michael Stanley Band.

YOUNGSTOWN — Today’s parade for the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Italian Festival will begin at 3 p.m. at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Lincoln Avenue. It will proceed southbound on Fifth Avenue, then eastbound on West Wood Street, northbound on Wick Avenue, and then eastbound on East Rayen Avenue to Watt Street, where it will end.

Classic Cruiser concert

NORTH LIMA — The Classic Cruisers will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday as part of Beaver Township’s Music in the Park summer concert series. The free concert is at Woodworth Park on Luther Avenue, off East Western Reserve Road between Market Street and Southern Boulevard. Concert admission is free.

‘Jersey Boys’ sets records in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — The final week of the “Jersey Boys” run at the State Theatre set the world record for attendance for the smash Broadway musical. The week of July 15-20 grossed $1,883,450, exceeding the mark set for any eight-performance week, including Broadway, London, Chicago, Las Vegas and the national tour.

This figure also represents a new PlayhouseSquare record for gross sales in one week.

Additionally, “Jersey Boys” broke the PlayhouseSquare attendance record for a regular eight-show week, with 24,655. The previous record was set in June of 1993 by the original tour of “The Phantom of the Opera” (24,466).
