NFL ROUNDUP News and notes

Jets: Vernon Gholston was ready to hit the books after taking the field for the first time as the New York Jets’ latest millionaire. “I’m definitely a step behind,” the No. 6 overall pick out of Ohio State said Friday. “I missed practice [Thursday] and I haven’t been up here, but, you know, it’s just something to deal with and I’ll do some extra studying tonight and keep pushing.” Gholston’s one-day, two-practice holdout ended when the deal was approved in time for the pass rusher to be on the field with his teammates for the start of practice on the second day of training camp. Gholston’s agent, Ben Dogra of CAA Football, told The Associated Press that the contract is worth $50 million, with $21 million guaranteed over five years.

Seahawks: Lawrence Jackson needed a new truck. His was 12-years old, broken down. The window wouldn’t go up. The seat belt didn’t work. Now he’s got a new ride. Jackson, the speedy defensive end and first-round pick out of Southern California, signed just minutes before Seattle’s first practice of training camp Friday morning. The deal was worth $11.25 million over five years.

Cardinals: Quarterback Kurt Warner, whose three-year deal expires this season, is seeking an extension. For him, the only question is whether he should be paid like a starter or a backup. The 37-year-old Warner enters camp as Matt Leinart’s backup. But Warner, who started 11 games last year, wants starter’s money if he wins the job. Warner said Friday that he’s not looking to break the bank but merely wants to be “fairly compensated.” Meanwhile, the Cardinals have agreed to a six-year contract with cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, their top draft pick.

Cowboys: Veteran receiver Terry Glenn, who resisted signing an injury clause after missing most of last season with a right knee injury, is expected to be waived.

Jets: Danny Woodhead, the NCAA’s career rushing leader, was carted off the practice field with an apparent knee injury. The nature and severity of the injury wasn’t immediately known. The 5-foot-7 running back, a rookie free agent from Chadron State who has already become an early training camp fan favorite, was injured late in practice and helped to the sideline by running back Thomas Jones, fullback Tony Richardson and a team trainer.

Yard lines: The Panthers signed tackle Jeff Otah, leaving only fellow first-round pick Jonathan Stewart without a deal as training camp gets underway. … The Saints signed second-round pick Tracy Porter to a four-year contract, then released veteran tight end Eric Johnson, whose starting job was in jeopardy after the Saints traded for Jeremy Shockey earlier in the week. … Titans All Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth agreed to terms, drove three hours from his home in East Tennessee and signed his $7.25 million tender. … Rams running back Steven Jackson, entering the final year of his contract, was a no-show for the opening day of training camp and will be fined as an unexcused absence. … Devin Hester showed up at Bears’ training camp without a new contract. Whether the kick return star will practice without one remains to be seen. After missing the first two days, Hester reported Friday because he saw some progress in negotiations.
