Warning given on letters
YOUNGSTOWN — An Illinois-based private company has once again been sending letters to local homeowners in recent weeks offering to provide certified copies of their deeds for $59.50.
Noralynn Palermo, Mahoning County recorder, said the deeds are public records, of which her office provides copies upon request at $2 per page, plus a $1 certification fee. The average deed is two pages. Those wanting copies may obtain them at the recorder’s office in the county courthouse, 120 Market St., or by mail.
Dog rescued from blaze
YOUNGSTOWN — A dog found in the smoky kitchen at 429 W. Myrtle Ave. was resuscitated by firefighters and turned over to the dog warden for temporary care. Firefighters found heavy smoke when they arrived at the South Side house around 6:45 p.m. Thursday. No one was home.
The fire appeared to start in the living room, just inside the front door, where an electrical power strip with several appliances plugged in was found, reports show. A “V” burn pattern was visible on the inside wall, extending up and burning through the ceiling. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage to the house and contents was set at $7,500.
School lawsuit refiled
AUSTINTOWN — A lawsuit that was brought against the Austintown Board of Education in 2006 has been refiled in the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas.
John Price, a former district bus driver, is suing the school district for defamation of character, breach of contract and wrongful prosecution.
Price was employed by the district from 2000 to 2005. In 2003, he was accused of failing to return a $6,300 overpayment, although Price claims he informed the district of the mistake. He is asking for more than $75,000 in damages.
Austintown Superintendent Doug Heuer said he had no comment on the matter.
School project approved
COLUMBUS — The Western Reserve Local School District’s construction project was among more than three dozen statewide that have been given the green light by the Ohio School Facilities Commission.
The agency approved a total of $1.9 billion for projects at 40 districts across the state, to be financed through a combination of state and local funding. Western Reserve was OK’d for a $24.4 million project to build a building to house all students in the district. The state share will be about $13.2 million, with the district paying about $11.2 million. The state commission announced the approved projects late Thursday.
The Ohio Department of Education annually ranks school districts using a formula pinpointing property wealth. Those receiving the lowest ranking are targeted for funding through commission.
Garbage ordinance set
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City residents are no longer allowed to put their garbage out until 3 p.m. the day before it is to be collected. Council recently enacted an ordinance addressing the matter in response to complaints that some residents have been putting their garbage out two or three days before their collection day.
The measure also specifies that residents must remove garbage cans or other receptacles by 7 p.m. the day of collection.
